Vigilant Wolf

Native Americans believed in man's brotherhood with the wolf. I felt this kinship as I painted this elusive animal. After many layers of loose oils of similar shades of burnt sienna, this wolf appeared cautiously on my canvas.

This lanky predator emerged from a brownish gray under painting that I developed with multiple shades of raw umber and cerulean blue. Eyes of steely blue gray was a result of these colors blended with linseed oil and eggs washes.

Siberian Tiger

According to the National Geographic, Siberian (or Amur) tigers are the world's largest cats. They live primarily in eastern Russia's birch forests, though some exist in China and North Korea. They are on the brink of extinction which calls for me as an artist, to place him in a painting that will last for decades.

Though the Mexican Gray wolf was once numbered in the thousands, these wolves were wiped out in the U.S. by the mid-1970s, with just a handful existing in zoos. The Mexican gray wolf was listed as endangered under the Ecological Society of America in 1976.

Orange Blossom

The Red Fox is known as the largest of the fox species. It is also the one most people are familiar with. They do have a gorgeous red coloring to them where their name comes from. They can also be shades of orange and brown too. Some have shiny coats and is a nice glimmer as they move around. Her pointed ears provide very good hearing ability.

Oil on canvas of a Bobcat found in the northern part of New Mexico. Painting his fur was a challenge with so many shades of gray and brown, putting a cute face and tufted ears on this animal that still remains a predator.

Sleek and graceful, cougars are solitary and secretive. Urban development has encroached into their natural habitat, and now they are often spotted by hikers and joggers in the suburbs of large cities. This cougar was seen in the rocky area west of Austin, Texas. He could be living in your neighborhood.

Fearsome Beast

Painting this bear took forever because of the massive amount fur and long hairs on him. Using mostly Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ochre, his face finally appeared before me. Grizzly bears, large and dangerous, are common in Canada and Alaska, but can be found in Yellowstone Park and in northwestern Montana. Even though they eat almost any type of vegetation, they will kill wildlife and livestock making him feared and very unpopular with local ranchers, hikers, and campers.
