The Apache are natives of the Southwest deserts where the sky appears endless. I used Cerulean Blue as the dominate color to demonstrate the beauty of the vast desert sky. French Ultra Marine Blue was best pick for the Army Scout’s coat. Burnt Sienna is the perfect contrasting color for the stunning horse.

The Mountain Men/Trappers flourished for a few decades, however, the demand for beaver fur dropped quickly. Most beaver pelts were sent to England for making hats. The days of the trapper making a good living by fur trapping ended when fur was replaced by silk.

Large Brahma bulls are commonly found grazing in the pastures in Texas and Oklahoma. I saw this bull enjoying a warm summer day grazing near a fence and I just had to stop and take his picture. I knew I had to paint him. I entered his painting of Precious and was accepted into the Oil Painters of America’s Twenty-sixth Annual National Exhibition to be held at Eisele Gallery of Fine Art in Cincinnati, Ohio from May 12 through June 10, 2017.

Mocha and Cream was painted with a heavy use of shadows and light. I used a very dark background to illuminate the beautiful feature of this horse's face. When I start a new painting of a Native American, it is difficult to separate the real from the myth that perpetuates the fighting spirit of these brave men. While developing the face of this man, I could see he was struggling with a great decision. He is the defender of his way of life, the custodian of his land. I wanted to depict the remarkable strength in each feature in his face and the conflict he must be experiencing.

His name is Gus; he weighs about 2200 pounds. Brahmas have been bred as beef cattle, but not Gus. He lives in a small pasture next to the post office in Addison, Texas. I just had to stop and take his picture and he didn't seem to mind since he was eating on a stack of hay.
